Tomorrow we are to witness the first Total Lunar Eclipse since November of 2022. This celestial phenomenon happens when the Moon moves into the Earth’s shadow. As the sunlight passes through the earth’s atmosphere and touches the moon, it can appear almost red in the sky - we call this the Blood Moon.

The Blood Moon has a storied history for those who lacked a scientific explanation for the event. In many cases, the appearance of this moon washed in crimson foretold of doom and even the fall of a king (we can only hope).

But as we move our way through Women’s History Month, I want to reclaim the symbology of the Blood Moon. Women’s blood is especially sacred. We are bathed in blood when we are born, we bleed as we move from child to woman and we bleed yet again as we bring life into the world.

We are taught in Western society to fear blood - it is forever linked with harm, death and impurity. But those are patriarchal ideologies that prevent us from embracing the sacredness of our life-sustaining ichor.

Blood can also refer to our bloodlines - our sacred ancestors - those who came before us and from who we stem. Ancestor work can be a powerful way to claim your identity, your power and your destiny.
